Fixing Your Foot Health Habits

Do you think it is too late to fix your foot health habits? Of course not. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month. Now is the time to get rid of those unhealthy habits and begin creating new ones. Change is possible, and the team at The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine is here to support you on your journey to healthier feet and a healthier body.

Before we create new habits, though, we must recognize the not-so-great ways we have been caring for our feet. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do you skip daily foot inspections?

  2. Do you ignore foot pain?

  3. Do you walk barefoot?

  4. Do you share shoes with others?

  5. Do you smoke?

The list above is just a short quiz to get you thinking. If you nodded your head “yes” to any of those questions, we have some unhealthy habits to break. There is hope, so keep reading for helpful tips.

Inspect your feet every day

  • Look at your feet each day

  • Take notes and share any concerns with your podiatrist

  • Wash, dry, and moisturize your feet daily

Talk to your podiatrist about foot pain

  • Contact your doctor about any changes, including foot pain

  • Follow at-home medical advice until your appointment

  • Switch shoes or allow time for rest

Always wear shoes

  • If you have diabetes, following this tip is crucial

  • Wear non-slip socks while at home

  • Check shoes for holes or other signs of wear

Only wear your shoes

  • Every shoe design is different, so stick with your own

  • Common foot infections can pass from one person to another

  • Custom orthotics designs are specific just for you

Cancel your cigarette run

  • There are no health benefits to smoking

  • Smoking hurts your heart, lungs, feet, eyes, and so much more

  • Connect with community resources for support

You are not alone as you try to shift your attention to your foot health. It is not too late to make a change, and we welcome your phone call at any time. We can answer questions and provide starting tips for your daily foot inspections. We are cheering you on in this decision.
