Exercise at Home and Avoid Injuries

Congratulations on continuing your exercise routine or beginning a new one. The extra time at home has challenged us, but staying healthy with diet and exercise is a great idea. Unfortunately, skipping a few steps before exercising can lead to injuries or discomfort. From drinking water to stretching, these pre-workout tips can prepare your body for a workout. Here are a few common exercise injuries to avoid. The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine is here to help you know the signs and symptoms.

Achilles tendonitis

If you’re keeping up with your sporting activities (socially distant, of course), you’re at risk of developing this condition without proper rest. One major sign of Achilles tendonitis is pain along the back of the leg and near the heel. The Achilles tendon allows you to extend your feet and point your toes to the floor. It is also the thickest, strongest, and longest tendon in the body.

Ankle sprains

An ankle sprain is a very common condition. You can usually tell if your ankle is sprained based on swelling or increasing pain. If you think you have a sprained ankle, begin with rest, ice, compression, and anti-inflammatory medication. Don’t ignore an ankle sprain. Untreated sprains can lead to prolonged symptoms.

Fractures

Yikes! A broken bone is painful, and it’s best not to guess the severity. If you think you just experienced a broken bone while working out, skip the telemedicine option. This is an emergency situation. Depending on the type of fracture, you may also need surgery. Fracture types range from displaced to hairline to compound. Regardless, contact us for care. We’re here to help.

We hope to see you soon for regular appointments at The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine. Until then, please take it easy and listen to your body while exercising. Contact us with any questions. You can also connect with us through telemedicine or video visits. This is best for non-emergency appointments. Call (212) 980-6487.
